Study Spaces I
Group #2

How can we create better study spaces on campus that address the needs of a study space user?

Many students feel like the study spaces on campus are outdated and lack the necessary resources needed for students to be productive. In order to understand the various problems with current study spaces, the team created a survey and conducted user interviews. From their research, they created a condensed list of problems of the current study spaces and chose a specific location on campus, Student Services Building, to focus on.

Current State

  • Most students at UT feel like the study spaces on campus do not meet their needs.

  •  While there are many study spaces on campus, people feel like they are either too crowded or do not have what they are looking for (ex. outlets, comfortable seating, food, technology, etc.)

"There aren’t enough study spaces for the number of people that go to this school”

- Melany,

  Sophmore

"There are a lot of underused spaces at UT that can be transformed into study spaces”

Research

  • Through surveys and user interviews, the team was able to get feedback on the current space itself and understand the types of issues.

Overarching Themes

  • Insight #1: Overcrowdedness for UT study spaces is a major problem

  • Insight #2: Students don’t like studying at home, but do so out of convenience

  • Insight #3: Proximity to study spaces matters

Immersion II

"During the day, it feels hospital-like. At night it seems super deserted. I think they kick you out at some point. It’s not a study vibe, very clinical, but I prefer not being in the library”

- Daniel,

  Chemical Engineering      major

“Make it more student friendly…… feels like it’s very white and gray.”

- Unkown,

  Plan II Honors

Next Steps

Ideation and Implementation

  • Increase communication with administration and setting up regular meeting times

  • Select a place for the intended renovation (Student Services Building)

  • Enter the prototyping phase
